BIOGRAPHY

Carla Haber registered clinical counsellor

Carla Haber MA
Registered Clinical Counsellor

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and a member of both the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) and the Canadian Counselling Association (CCA).  As an RCC I have met the standards of the BCACC by going through rigorous academic training with a Master's degree, and have extensive clinical supervised experience. I have undergone a criminal record check and also have references from recognized mental health practitioners. In addition, the BCACC’s Code of Ethical Conduct and Standards of Clinical Practice and the BCACC’s complaints, investigations and discipline process hold me accountable for my work.

More information regarding the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors may be found at: www.bc-counsellors.org

I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology.  My Bachelor of Arts degree, also obtained from the University of British Columbia, was with a major in Family Studies and a minor in Psychology.  My thesis, entitled “Meaning and Process in Early Adolescent Friendship Conversations” earned me the Honours with Distinction designation upon graduation and a Certificate of Academic Excellence from the Canadian Psychological Association.

In addition to training through my degree, I have additional training in the use of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Emotionally Focused Couple’s Therapy, Gottman Couple's Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.  I am a registered counsellor with the Crime Victim Assistance Program of the Lower Mainland.  This program provides free counselling services to those with a Victim’s Compensation claim number.

I have experience delivering short term (solution focused) and long term (trauma related) therapy to adolescents and adults.  I have led art therapy groups for trauma victims, disordered eating clients, as well as facilitated group social assertiveness training for individuals experiencing social anxiety.  I also work part time at the University of British Columbia as a Research Assistant on a project focused on youth in transition and the counselling process.

Prior to obtaining my counselling degree I worked for over 20 years in various health care settings: first in qualitative health care appraisal, and then in research for orthopaedic trauma victims.  I am married and have three adult children.  I enjoy working with adolescents and have also worked with children and parents in several volunteer capacities.
